SDCC is (almost) here!
Hey everyone!
As I’m writing this, I’m getting ready to head out to San Diego next week for the granddaddy of them all, San Diego Comic Con (Comic Con International if you’re being a stickler)
I’m hoping to have an awesome con, meeting folks I’m currently working with, and ones that I hope to work with in the future. My “behind the scenes” schedule of meetings is still in flux, even this close, but my public appearances are all set! I’m so excited, I even made a little video about it.
I’m really looking forward to meeting everyone who can drop by, so if you’re going to be at the con, please come by and say hello! Let me know that you’re a newsletter subscriber, and I might even have a little something special for you!
Cars!
Do you like cars? I’m not talking about the Gary Numan song, which is great, but lets say, hypothetically, action-packed high octane comic book stories featuring a lot of cars. If that sounds even a little bit cool to you, then I have some awesome news for you that should be dropping next week, right around the convention.
Till then, I’ll just leave you with this cryptic image.
Trust me, you’re gonna love it.
Tweetpocalypse NOW!
It’s been a crazy couple of weeks for social media - when Twitter decided to limit views to 500/day for non-verified users, Mark Zuckerberg figured it was the perfect time to launch Threads, an Instagram-linked competitor. At the same time, Jack Dorsey’s Blue Sky sent out a ton of invites, and the comic creator community there is starting to thrive.
I’m on both platforms - @rdouek.bsky.social, and @rdouek@threads.net, if you’re using them, drop me a follow and I’ll do my best to keep in touch.
I don’t know where social media is going, and to be honest, it’s not great to have two more platforms to keep up with, not to mention whatever is going to be touted as the next twitter-killer. So while this three-way cage match between Musk, Zuckerberg and Dorsey plays out, I’ll be keeping up as best I can, but also trying to focus on this newsletter a lot more - for one, if you’re reading it, you’re definitely interested in what I have to say, and for another, I can go way more in depth on topics that are interesting to me, and that I think you’ll find rewarding to learn about.
By far the funniest thing about all these social media shenanigans, to me at least, is the fact that while this was all going on, I made a dumb joke tweet about Christopher Walken in the new Dune trailer. And then my phone started blowing up.
Even with all the tweet limits, this tweet got close to 500,000 views, officially making it the most widely read tweet I’ve ever made, and if I’m being completely honest, the most widely read thing I’ve ever written, period!
Of course, when I tweet about my comics, I don’t get nearly the same response, which goes to show the challenges of using social media for marketing - it’s hard to get engagement with the actual work you want to promote, and much easier to get it with quick, one-off observations or jokes.
So I guess the lesson here is to start tweeting about my comics with pictures of Christopher Walken, maybe. I think there’s more to explore here in a future newsletter, but I want to think about it some more before I dive in.
Ok, back to prepping for the con, hope you all are having a great summer, and like I said, if you’re going to be in San Diego, come find me and say hello!
- Rich
Maybe I’ll see you there and can sneak in a quick handshake, my dude. Have a great show!
See you there!
