Remember when I said I’d have some big news to announce soon?
Well, here’s the first piece! (but not the last by far)
Starting in December, I’ll be coming aboard to co-write a new arc of the official Magic: The Gathering comic, with the supremely talented Jed Mackay, featuring art by the amazing Ig Guara, and covers by Miguel Mercado and Fabiana Mascolo!
It’s an amazing opportunity, one that I’m really thankful to Jed and the editorial team at Boom! for bringing my way. Probably dating myself a bit here, but I used to play a ton of Magic in my college days - waaaay before there were Planeswalkers or anything like that. We’re talking Ice Age here!
I have to give a special shoutout here to one of my oldest friends, Ben Moskowitz, who invited me over to his dorm room to check out this weird new card game he bought. We played like, three games and I think I was in the local comic shop next day buying my first decks and boosters.
I wound up getting a TON of cards over the years, and loved playing and building decks. My two favorites were a zombie/undead horde Black deck, and a Red/White deck built around dragons and artifact creatures.
I eventually fell out of the scene, but I’ve been amazed to see it take off in popularity over the years - and was excited to get to know all the new characters, monsters, and entire planes that have been added to the game since I last played it - including comic-exclusive characters like Isona Maive, pictured here. She has a HUGE part to play in our issues, so check her out!
I’m really excited for this arc, because I got to draw on the decades of great lore built up around the game, and work with some amazing characters, in the planeswalkers that populate the MtG universe.
This arc is building on the foundation Jed and Ig laid in the first 20 issues, taking things to even crazier, action packed heights… if you are a fan of Magic, you are not going to BELIEVE some of the things we have planned. And if you’re not a fan, well, you very well may be by the time you get done reading it.
This story is BIG - like universe-shaking, Endgame-style big. We’re pulling out all the stops. I hope you’ll check it out!
Our first issue is in shops on December 7th - the order code is OCT220397 if your retailer needs it. Please let your comic shop know you want a copy - preorders really help let the publisher know that the book is in demand!
Thanks as always for your support, and I hope you’ll join me in the world of Magic this December!
- Rich
P.S. - for those who were wondering, this is what I referred to as Project Boots in the last newsletter! :)
