Hey everyone!
Hope you all had a happy holiday, whatever you celebrate! We took a bit of time off to spend with family, and it was really nice to just unplug for a few days. But, I’m back at it this week, and making the most of the last week of 2021!
Out this week: Wastelanders: Star-Lord #1
Been talking about this one for a while, and I would have loved to share some pages earlier, but I had to wait until Marvel released an official preview - but now that it’s out, let me present the first 3 pages of the book!
Back when I first read Old Man Logan, I was as surprised and shocked as anyone to find out Logan had been tricked into killing the rest of the X-Men (sorry for the spoilers!), and for me, that scene at the X-Mansion really showed how messed up the world of the Wastelands is - how it really pulls no punches in terms of how dark things can get - so when I conceived this story, one of the things I was hoping to do was find a reason for Peter Quill to visit the “scene of the crime”, so to speak.
Luckily, Sam Humphries’ excellent Black Vortex Saga had established a link between the Guardians of the Galaxy and the X-Men - and one X-Man in particular - Kitty Pryde, who Peter Quill had even been engaged to at one point.
In the Old Man Quill series, we learn that Peter had a wife, and a family on the planet Spartax, and losing them nearly broke him - which of course means Kitty and Peter didn’t actually wind up together - but the end of a relationship doesn’t always mean the end of love, or caring for someone. So I thought it would weigh pretty heavily on Peter that the first person he loved enough to want to spend his entire life with was gone, and he didn’t even get a chance to say goodbye.
That chance is what Peter is looking for when he rolls up on the ruins of the X-Mansion - but what he finds there is… well, you’ll just have to read the book to find out!
I couldn’t be happier with this issue, and the work that Brent Peeples, Cris Peter, Cory Petit, Mark Basso, and Andrew Baumgarnter put in to make it look, and read great. I hope you enjoy reading it!
Until next time, folks - which will be in 2022! This year was pretty crazy - lots of ups, lots of downs. I have a lot of cool stuff lined up for next year, and while I’m sure it will have its fair share of surprises, I’m really looking forward to it.
Happy New Year!
